When good doors go bad.

Tired of fighting your doors just to enjoy the view?

We all love a quiet, peaceful home. But have you ever tried to softly close a bedroom door, only to have it scrape loudly across the carpet? Or maybe you have a front door that requires a heavy shoulder shove just to get it to lock?

Lately, the team at Neel General Contracting has been doing a ton of door repairs right here in Central Mississippi. Doors are the hardest working parts of your house. When they stop working right, it ruins your privacy and can even drive up your energy bills.

If your doors are acting up, you aren't alone! Here are the three most common interior and exterior door headaches we are fixing for local homeowners right now.

1. The "Carpet Scraper" (Interior Doors)

  • The Problem: You just got plush new carpets installed, or your home’s floors have settled over time. Now, the bottom of the door drags across the floor. It ruins your carpet and makes the door incredibly hard to push.

  • The Fix: Don't keep forcing it! Forcing a dragging door will bend the hinges and scratch your floors. We take the door down, precisely trim the bottom edge using professional tools, and rehang it so it glides smoothly over your thickest rugs.

When your new carpet looks great, but your door refuses to glide over it.

2. The "Ghost Door" (Doors That Won't Stay Put)

  • The Problem: You open a door halfway, walk away, and it slowly swings open or shut all by itself. Don't worry, your house isn't haunted!

  • The Fix: This usually means the door hinges are loose, stripped, or out of alignment. Over time, heavy doors pull the short factory screws right out of the wooden frame. We fix this by replacing those old, stripped screws with longer, heavy-duty structural screws that bite deep into the wall framing. This pulls the door back into perfect balance so it stays exactly where you leave it.

Time to swap those tired, worn-out hinges for some heavy-duty hardware.

3. The Sticky Front Door (The Mississippi Humidity Effect)

  • The Problem: Your front or back door shuts perfectly fine in the winter. But during our long, hot, humid summers, you have to slam it or lift the handle just to get it to latch.

  • The Fix: Wood expands when it gets hot and wet. If your exterior door isn't sealed correctly, it drinks up the Mississippi moisture and swells. We adjust the hinges, plane down the tight spots, and reseal the edges to keep the weather outside where it belongs.
